Bookish at Tawas Bay
We’re a small, independent bookstore in the historic Liberty Building in Tawas City, Michigan. Come down to say hello–you’ll find us at 402 West Lake Street (Route 23)–adjacent to the Sunny Side Cafe.
We foster cats at Bookish–most from the Sunrise Side Animal Rescue. We have placed 14 cats since we opened in 2025. In many cases, our foster cats are people shy. So if you don’t see one around, ask and we’ll track them down for you to say hello.
Bring your coffee and browse. Bring your kiddos and read. Come for an event, or host an event here. Our goal is to welcome everyone–locals and visitors, alike–to find their next favorite book, relax in a comfortable space, and build community.
We look forward to meeting you!

Bookshop.org
Bookshop.org is a nonprofit online bookstore that supports small Indie bookstores like ours. You purchase books in the same way you would on Amazon, but when you buy through Bookshop.org, 30 percent of your sale goes back to your local bookstore.
What’s happening?
On August 19, 2026, we’re hosting A Swift Night Out with the AuSable Valley Audubon Society. Arrive at 6pm. We’ll have drinks and snacks, play bird trivia, learn about swifts, then go out and count them at a local site.
Our current foster cat is Cassie. She looks a little like a harlequin rabbit, with white fur and pale gray and apricot markings. She is a lovely girl–very affectionate–and is looking for her forever home.
We have a Bookish Book Club that meets at the store on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 6pm. Our August read is The Sunflower Boys by Sam Wachman, a coming of age story set in Ukraine before and during the war.
